Ground floors can be separated into two main groups;

  1. Suspended timber & concrete floors
  2. Ground bearing concrete slab floors

Regular amendments of the building regulations over the years have meant that all ground floors now require adequate levels of insulation whilst still meeting the basic functions of all floors with respect to strength, dimensional stability & the prevention of moisture travel into the interior of a building. Well insulated ground floors makes a major contribution to the over all efficiency performance of a building. Important considerations when insulating a ground floor include –

  • The positioning of insulation within the floor structure
  • Thermal performance
  • Thermal bridging
  • Condensation
  • Air leakage
  • The applied loading
